Kazakhstan and Japan are strengthening their air connectivity through a new direct route between Almaty and Tokyo. Air Astana will operate this service beginning November 30, 2026, with the inaugural flight departing from Almaty and returning flights commencing on December 1. The connection represents the airline's 22nd new route launched in 2026.
The twice-weekly service will use Airbus A321LR aircraft featuring both business and economy class seating. Flights are scheduled to depart Almaty on Mondays and Thursdays at 9:55 pm, arriving in Tokyo at 9:25 am the following day. Return flights will operate on Tuesdays and Fridays, departing Tokyo at 10:55 am and arriving in Almaty at 4:20 pm, with flight times of 7.5 hours outbound and 9 hours 25 minutes on the return journey.
Air Astana Group CEO Ibrahim Canliel described the Tokyo route as a significant step in establishing Kazakhstan as a transport hub connecting Central Asia and the Caucasus. The partnership operates under a codeshare agreement with Japan Airlines. Economy fares begin at 350,552 tenge for a round trip, while business class tickets start at 1,398,918 tenge.
The new route will facilitate increased trade, economic and cultural exchange between the two nations. Japanese travelers can enter Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 30 days, making the connection accessible for visitors seeking to explore Central Asia.
