Penang Island in Malaysia has been named in National Geographic's annual list of the best places to travel in 2027. The list, unveiled on October 20, includes 25 destinations worldwide, with Penang as the only Southeast Asian entry.
The selection was based on a nomination and research process by National Geographic's travel experts and editorial teams. They highlighted Penang's mix of natural beauty and cultural heritage, including George Town's UNESCO-listed historic streets, rainforest-backed beaches, traditional villages, and mangrove-lined rivers.
Penang is also known for its vibrant food scene, featuring dishes like Char Koay Teow and Penang Assam Laksa. Notable dining spots include Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery for Nyonya cuisine and Au Jardin for contemporary fine dining.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai called the inclusion a proud achievement and an opportunity to introduce Penang's attractions to a global audience. Other destinations on the 2027 list include Vestland in Norway, Luxor in Egypt, Niigata in Japan, Chengdu in China, Jaipur in India, and Melbourne in Australia.
