Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports plans to introduce a 450-baht landing fee for foreign visitors, expected to take effect in the first quarter of next year. The fee was proposed after public hearings held over 35 days, where 80% of participants agreed with the rate, while others suggested a higher charge.
The ministry estimates the fee will generate over 8 billion baht in annual revenue, which will be used to improve safety for foreign tourists, including insurance coverage for accidents and emergencies, and upgrades to tourism facilities. Several collection methods are being considered, such as adding the fee to air ticket prices, using an application, or collecting at arrival kiosks, with the aim of avoiding inconvenience for visitors.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand's governor stated that the measure is not expected to significantly harm the tourism industry. However, it was noted that if the Middle East conflict continues, arrivals could drop by 25-28%. Meanwhile, the Chinese market is expanding by 17-18%, while the Indian market is slightly contracting.
For travelers, this means an additional cost of 450 baht when arriving in Thailand next year, but the fee is intended to contribute to their safety and better tourism facilities.
