Sri Lanka’s Tourism Story Moves Beyond the Peak Season

Sri Lanka is seeing a shift in how travellers engage with the island, with demand increasingly extending beyond the traditional November-April peak season. Occupancy between May and September has risen compared to the same period in 2025, supporting efforts to position Sri Lanka as a year-round destination.

The period from May to September is now called the Emerald Season, reflecting the country's diverse experiences available throughout the year. The hill country offers a cooler escape during these months, and the season includes important festivals like Vesak, Poson, and the Kandy Esala Perahera.

New experiences such as hiking, birdwatching, surfing, and Ayurveda-led wellness are broadening the island's appeal. The Pekoe Trail, a 300km route through the Central Highlands, offers year-round walking and birdwatching opportunities.

Sri Lanka's hospitality sector is also evolving, with six Michelin Keys awarded in 2026 across Resplendent Ceylon's portfolio. This includes recognition for properties like Ceylon Tea Trails, Wild Coast Tented Lodge, and Cape Weligama, enhancing the country's luxury itineraries.

For travellers, this means Sri Lanka offers viable travel options outside the traditional peak season, with cooler hill country escapes, cultural festivals, and diverse activities available from May to September.
