Japan has regained the leading position in the World Economic Forum's 2026 Travel and Tourism Development Index, which ranks 110 economies. The rankings were released on Friday, according to JIJI Press. Japan had placed third in the previous 2024 edition, after topping the list in 2021.
The United States came in second, followed by Spain in third, Australia in fourth, and France in fifth, as stated in the WEF report. The latest findings highlight Japan's strong cultural resources and improved transportation infrastructure.
The report also notes progress in dispersing visitors beyond major tourist destinations, part of efforts to address overtourism following a surge in foreign visitors. By extending its visitor base and encouraging travel beyond major centers, Japan has reduced concentration risk while maintaining record tourism performance, according to the report.
