Georgia rewards travelers who make room for more than one kind of experience, from navigating Tbilisi's hillside streets to viewing snow-covered Caucasus peaks and Black Sea forests. Travelers should give Tbilisi at least two days, exploring the Old Town on foot, crossing the Mtkvari River to the Bridge of Peace, and visiting the sulfur baths in Abanotubani. Narikala Fortress overlooks the old neighborhoods but access is restricted during restoration.
The journey from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda, known as Kazbegi, covers roughly 150 kilometers along the Georgian Military Highway, taking about three hours in good conditions. Highlights include Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri Fortress, and the Gergeti Trinity Church near Mount Kazbek. Travelers can use marshrutkas, rental cars, or private transfers, with overnight stays recommended for better walking and exploration time.
East of Tbilisi, Kakheti offers vineyards, family cellars, and qvevri wine-making traditions, with Sighnaghi and Telavi as useful bases. Mtskheta, a short journey from Tbilisi, features Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery. Kutaisi serves as a stop toward the Black Sea or Svaneti mountains, with Prometheus Cave and Gelati Monastery nearby. Batumi presents a coastal city with a seafront boulevard and subtropical feel, though beaches are pebbly.
For a wider itinerary, travelers can continue from Tbilisi to Yerevan, Armenia, via shared road transport, overnight train on scheduled days, or pre-booked car. The road journey is roughly 275 kilometers and takes five hours or more. Travelers should plan at least two nights in Yerevan and check Armenian entry rules and train schedules.
Trains connect major routes like Tbilisi to Batumi, while marshrutkas and intercity buses serve many towns at low cost. City transport in Tbilisi includes metro and buses, with ride-hailing apps useful for luggage or late travel. Rental cars offer independence but require caution on narrow mountain roads and separate authorization for driving into Armenia. Private drivers or guided tours are worthwhile for groups or scenic routes without bus stops.
